Dolby Atomos® The Quantum Cinema Experience
Dolby Atmos is the only really new invention over the last decade regarding Cinema Audio. A surround sound is created by 2 front and two back speakers as well as one center speaker. Optional one can add a sub-woofer. The sub-woofer should be an active system because standard amplifier cannot provide enough current to move a big membrane fast enough in order to generate a clear, clean base.
This means we have 5+1 channels or speakers in a standard surround system.
Dolby Atmos now adds two further channels for the ceiling as third dimension.
This is a big advancement in the Cinema experience. For example a helicopter overflight or a rain is with Dolby Atmos now sounding absolutely real.
The system is counting 2 front speakers, 2 rear speakers, one center speaker (5), one sub-woofer (5.1) and two ceiling speakers (5.1.2).
A Dolby Atmos audio or video source has 7 channels on audio information. A Dolby Atmos receiver or our BNK Atmos audio-splitter are able to separate this signals to power 7 amplifier channels. Good speakers need good amplifier with high-current output. 7 power amplifiers means already 4 Stereo amplifiers. Every channel more make it more difficult to keep a certain Audio quality standard. It is easy to understand that these highly integrated receivers with 7 or more build in amplifier can not provide even a close audio experience than one of our discrete build device (e.g. MA600, MA1000 or RV3).
Speaker operation on Voltage and not using high current cant produce a good Audio experience (just see the sickness of the wires). If one set of these speakers are not giving good results, many of them are also not better.
But this is exactly what the industry is selling since years: 7+1, 9+1, even 11 or 12 cheap speakers generation a "cheap" surround sound.
Dolby Atmos is here no difference. BNK strongly advises to use less speakers, but quality speakers with quality amplifiers using only the real Dolly audio signals (5.1 or 5.1.2).
